Living in a Scent: Hotels Become the New Battleground for Fragrance Brands

A 30ml bottle of concentrated perfume can cost thousands of yuan—yet what might prompt guests to pay for it could simply be a gust of sea breeze wafting through the lobby of a hotel in Quanzhou.

In 2026, China’s fragrance market is expanding at a pace far exceeding that of the broader beauty industry. According to multiple research institutions, China's perfume market reached approximately 30 billion yuan in 2025, growing between 11% and 20% year-on-year (depending on measurement criteria), while penetration remains only around 5%, significantly lower than Europe and America’s 40%–50%. Meanwhile, the hotel sector follows a different trajectory: industry data shows that from January to September 2025, new hotel business registrations dropped by 14.33% year-on-year, and nationwide hotel RevPAR declined by about 5% in the first half of the year—indicating saturated growth and compressed profits as the norm.

On one hand, there’s the fast-growing scent industry, eager for new experiential touchpoints; on the other, hotels struggling with存量 competition and seeking non-room revenue. These two curves converge in an invisible space: the air.

I. From Background Noise to Main Act: Three Entry Paths

Once, lobby fragrances were just a minor item on a hotel’s service list. Today, they’ve evolved into three distinct commercial pathways.

The first is B2B supply, positioning brands as “scent suppliers" for hotels. Australian fragrance systems provider Air Aroma has developed exclusive scents for Four Seasons, Ritz-Carlton, and Waldorf Astoria, and expanded its collaboration with InterContinental Group from 2024 to 2025, covering brands such as Indigo and Crowne Plaza. Domestically, ZhiZhen Fragrance has partnered with Huazhu, Kaiyuan, Hilton, and Wyndham, while Ariel Fragrance was named a benchmark brand in the 2025 Hotel Procurement Index for fragrances.

The second path is customized co-branding, creating “scent IPs" for hotels. American lifestyle brand Flamingo Estate created "Expansion" for JW Marriott, inspired by its signature experience "JW Garden"; Eastern fragrance brand Of Nature collaborated with Dunhuang Biyue Hotel, using Gansu’s local ingredient “Sichuan pepper leaves" as a base to weave in Silk Road stories. When New York’s Waldorf Astoria reopened in September 2025, it teamed up with Fueguia 1833 to launch “301 Park Avenue," a fragrance named after its address, offering matching candles and diffusers exclusively at the front desk.

The third path leverages retail partnerships, riding the wave of “hotel-as-channel"—setting up fragrance retail zones in lobbies and reception areas so guests can “smell it, then buy it," compressing the purchase journey to its most efficient form. What truly excites the industry is this third model: it transforms a single stay into a take-home business opportunity.

II. From Space to Body: Wenxian and Qixu’s “Value Loop"

The most complete example is the collaboration between Wenxian and the boutique luxury hotel brand Qixu KAIPUU.

In 2023, drawing inspiration from Quanzhou’s local terroir, the two launched two fragrances—"Jiao Yang Mei Shao" and "Ci Tong Yan Tan"—alongside travel-sized care products and sleep sprays, using OBP-certified ocean-recycled plastic for packaging. The real turning point came this year: from March 31 to April 30, during Wenxian’s “Xiang Xin Feng 2026" spring campaign, the two scents originally rooted in physical spaces were reimagined as wearable perfumes, launching a joint initiative with Qixu. Guests staying at Qixu Zhonglou or Qixu Jiao Shi hotels received limited-edition tea gifts and sample vials, while those booking themed room packages received corresponding fragrance sets.

“Experience first, own later"—the scent becomes an immersive environment you can step into. As Jingdian News described it, this marks a value loop transforming “space experience" into “retail product."

A similar logic is also unfolding in high-end resort markets. Liangshan Cultural Tourism Lugu Lake Hidden Luxury Escape Hotel—Marriott's Design Hotels' first member property in the Chinese mainland—has launched a cross-border collaboration with French brand Sisley starting winter 2025. The initial phase centers on the theme of "Hidden Healing Garden at Lugu Lake," later evolving into an elevated experience titled "Botanical Healing Imprint." This includes a full-day "botanical healing journey" featuring highland-inspired breakfasts, seasonal limited-edition botanical afternoon teas, Mosuo Dabu herbal baths, and the "Natural Imprint Workshop," seamlessly weaving Mosuo culture, native flora, and premium plant-based skincare philosophy into a unified olfactory experience.

III. Is Selling Scents More Profitable Than Selling Rooms?

What truly helps hotel groups make the numbers add up are retail figures.

Zhang Zhaijun, founder of Adina Lan, shared a widely cited statistic during an industry talk: the "Zen Tea" fragrance custom-designed for Qunar in 2017 now generates over 50 million yuan annually in non-room revenue. Derivative products—including reed diffusers, sprays, car fragrances, crystal stones, and souvenirs—developed around this tea scent have achieved "buy what you smell" accessibility directly in hotel lobbies. Brand data is even more telling: Qunar’s Zen Tea reed diffuser has sold over ten million units to date, with approximately 40% of orders coming from repeat purchases after guests check out—meaning hotels aren't just selling rooms, but continuously nurturing a portable lifestyle memory.

Atour, meanwhile, has pursued a more comprehensive self-built path. In 2021, Atour upgraded its scene-based retail brand to "Atour Market," launching three original brands. Among them, "SAVHE Sahe," named from the Lisu language word for "breath," draws inspiration from Yunnan’s wild natural elements and collaborates with international fragrance houses like Firmenich. Notably, in recent years Sahe has evolved beyond retail into Atour’s own luxury hotel brand: Shenzhen Binhe Times Sahe Hotel embeds Eastern incense culture into guestrooms, offering three signature scents—pine needle wood, camellia flower, and green pomelo fruit—paired with wellness pouches to create a "scent memory field," complemented by meditation rooms and mindfulness practices.

From selling fragrances to opening hotels, scent has become a brand asset capable of bidirectional expansion.

IV. Expanding Boundaries: Anime, Pets, Culture & Travel, and Silver Economy

Beyond hotels, the "scent+" crossover interface is being systematically expanded. According to the "2026 China Scent Ecosystem White Paper" jointly released by Yingtong Group and Kantar, four key directions are emerging:

Scent * Pan-Secondary World. Japanese character perfume specialty store Primaniacs teamed up with Mobile Suit Gundam to launch a collaborative fragrance line, creating unique scents for four characters—Amuro Ray, Char Aznable, Sayla Mass, and Lalah Sune. Amuro features a fresh soapy note, while Char boasts a delicate fougère accord. Priced at 7,920 yen per 30ml bottle, each comes with a character scent card and went on sale in stores on August 21. Fans aren’t buying perfume—they’re purchasing tangible personalities of their favorite characters.

Scent * Pet Economy. MCM launched its "Zoo Universe" collection in 2025, designing bottle caps as collectible animal sculptures, each with distinct personality traits for the French Bulldog, Dragon Baby, and Rabbit Baby. The slogan bluntly states, "It's not perfume—it's your pet." Guangzhou W Hotel once collaborated with the series to offer a "Afternoon Paradise" themed afternoon tea priced at 368 yuan per set, including a complimentary fragrance souvenir, with branded photo spots also set up in the hotel’s trendy lounge. Pet-friendliness itself is becoming a standard feature—Fengyue Hotels & Resorts partnered with Royal Canin to create pet-friendly rooms and introduced a "Pet at Home" certification service.

Scent * Cultural Tourism. During the 2025 Christmas season, Yingtong Group joined forces with five ultra-luxury hotels—including Shanghai Yangyun Aman, Bund Waldorf Astoria, and Sanya Mandarin Oriental—for a "Christmas Tree Lighting" scent-themed tour. Earlier, Noble Isle drew inspiration from the 1314 double-decker bus and collaborated with Shangri-La hotels in Hangzhou, Ningbo, Wenzhou, and Yiwu to infuse urban charm into fragrances, culminating in a co-branded afternoon tea and gift set.

Scent * Silver Economy. This is the new direction outlined in the white paper: there’s a clear market gap for low-irritation, high-perception products targeting older adults, as well as cognitive intervention products based on memory recall. The core opportunity lies not in developing isolated products, but in embedding olfactory services into wellness, companionship, and memory-support systems.

A more everyday signal comes from trend reports by DTC Cloud, IFF, and Mintel: in 2025, China's fragrance personal care penetration rate reached 68%. Fragrance has evolved from a supplementary feature of personal care products into a key factor influencing purchase decisions.

V. The Next Question: Can Scent Be a Long-Term Strategy?

Amid the boom, underlying concerns are equally evident.

First, homogenization. When terms like "Zen tea," "white tea," and "sandalwood" become generic language for mid-tier hotels, scents lose their distinctiveness and turn into background noise. What truly matters is the ability to translate local culture—Qingdao’s sea breeze, Lugu Lake’s vegetation, Dunhuang’s Sichuan pepper leaves—into unique experiences that cannot be mass-produced.

Second, domestic brands continue to restructure. Brands such as Chunshan, Xizi Linglong, and Huayan Jimu have closed stores and liquidated inventory, while Guan Xia and Wenxian have strengthened their positions through diversified product lines and offline expansion. Hotel channels act as amplifiers, not moats.

Third, the difficulty of delivering consistent experiences. Once scent management fails, it becomes a disaster: concentration levels, zoning, ventilation, individual differences—any single failure can backfire on the brand.

The white paper forecasts that by 2028, China’s olfactory ecosystem market—including perfumes, home fragrances, personal care, and spatial scents—will reach approximately 405 billion yuan. For hotels, the battle over air quality may hinge not on whose scent smells better, but on who can sustainably cultivate a scent into a memorable, repeatable, and portable life experience.

After all, guests may forget their room numbers, but they’re unlikely to forget the moment they open the door.
