The speed increase of China Railway Express rewrites the cross-border supply chain landscape of the fragrance industry
The cross-border circulation of fragrances, essential oils, and aromatherapy products, which have long relied on sea and air transportation, is now ushering in a new dividend period for land logistics. With the normalization of the China-Europe freight train service across the "Trans-Caspian Middle Corridor (TITR)" in 2025-2026, the frequency of the "personal care dedicated train" from Zhengzhou to Hamburg being increased to five times per week, and the significant improvement in the efficiency of the Erlianhaote central passage, the European export route for Chinese fragrance brands and the inbound route for niche European spices have been simultaneously opened up, providing a "third option" between air and sea transportation for medium and high value-added aromatic products.

New channel: The Trans-Caspian Corridor bypasses the bottleneck of the northern route, reducing the import time of fragrant raw materials by nearly half

Since 2026, the Trans-Caspian International Transport Corridor (via Kazakhstan-Caspian Sea-Azerbaijan-Georgia), originating from Chengdu, Xi'an, and Jinhua, has entered into regular scheduled operations. The transit time from China to Türkiye has been optimized to approximately 15 days, and the journey to the core hubs in Europe takes about 18 to 25 days, saving 20 to 30 days compared to traditional maritime transportation.
For the fragrance industry, the most direct beneficiary of this route is the import of natural spices and plant essential oils. Fragrance raw materials from the Grasse region of France, the Rose Valley of Bulgaria, and Türkiye can be transported to China via the southbound return train, avoiding the risk of congestion during transit via the northern route. Some aromatherapy brands have reported that seasonal essential oils, which used to rely on 40 to 50 days of sea freight for replenishment, can now be stocked on a monthly rolling basis via railway, significantly improving inventory turnover.

Personal Care Special Train: Fragrance-related Hardware Secures Guaranteed Transportation Capacity for the First Time

From May 2026, the frequency of the Zhengzhou-Hamburg customized personal care and household goods train will be increased to five times per week, accompanied by the "Quick Inspection Channel 2.0", with the average clearance time for full containers reduced to 1.8 hours. This dedicated train will primarily serve the export of hardware products such as aromatherapy diffusers, aroma stones, and beauty devices, meeting the distribution needs of domestic fragrance lifestyle brands expanding into European markets such as Germany and Poland.
"The regularization of train schedules means we no longer have to fight for shipping space during the peak seasons of Black Friday and Christmas," said the supply chain manager of a cutting-edge home fragrance brand in Shanghai. "Products like aromatherapy diffusers, which have batteries or heating elements, face many restrictions when shipped by air and are too slow when shipped by sea. Railway trains are currently the most cost-effective solution."

Expansion of the central corridor: speeding up the Erlianhaote port and facilitating bidirectional flow of spices from Mongolia

As the sole gateway for the China-Europe freight trains in the central corridor, the Erenhot railway port saw a cumulative total of over 25,000 freight trains pass through in June 2026. With 75 routes covering more than 70 hub cities in over 10 European countries, the joint inspection and priority clearance mechanisms have significantly reduced the detention time.
This is particularly beneficial for enterprises engaged in the trade of Chinese and Mongolian characteristic aromatic plants (such as dried lavender flowers and medicinal herbs) - the central corridor connects eastward to the North China fragrance industry belt (spice processing clusters in Hebei and Shandong) and extends westward directly to European distribution nodes. The increase in the two-way re-boxing rate also indirectly reduces the freight per box.

Industry reminder: Perfume liquid remains a sensitive item, requiring specialized compliance procedures

It is worth noting that perfumes containing alcohol (Class 3 dangerous goods) cannot be directly loaded into ordinary China-Europe freight containers at present. Currently, they are mostly declared through dedicated lines with "railway sensitive goods qualifications" or transferred to Hong Kong for customs clearance before entering the mainland. Essential oils are mostly transported as non-hazardous chemicals, but MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet), ingredient labeling, and regulatory documents for the target market (such as EU CPNP filing information for export reference) must be prepared in advance.

Industry insiders point out that as the product mix of China Railway Express (CRE) extends from high-value electronic products to high value-added categories such as personal care and aromatherapy products, if the pilot project for railway transportation standards for dangerous goods involving fragrance liquids can be promoted in the future, it will further unleash the potential of this "olfactory economy" in cross-border logistics.
